We often play rhythm patterns with the left and right hands in succession. This way of playing is pleasant for staying in time and promotes coordination between the two hands. If you divide 4 beats into smaller steps, you get eighth notes. You count this as 1 (and) 2 (and) 3 (and) 4 (and).
